Getting started
Where do I download Koda?
Koda is available on the iOS App Store. Open the App Store on your iPhone and search for "Koda" to install.
Which iPhone do I need?
iOS 17 or later. iPhone XS, XR, or newer recommended for the best experience. iPad support is on the roadmap.
Is Koda free?
There's a free tier that covers Today, calendar, reminders, and the basics. Koda Premium adds connected bank accounts, daily and weekly briefs, chat over your own data, and Smart Capture. Premium is $9.99/month or $79/year, with a 7-day free trial on the annual plan. Pricing is in USD; the App Store handles local equivalents.
Connecting your bank
Bank features require Koda Premium.
How does the bank connection work?
Koda uses Plaid. You enter your bank credentials directly into Plaid's secure interface; we never see your login. Plaid then sends your transactions and balances to Koda so we can show a unified view. Connecting a bank requires a Premium subscription.
Which banks are supported?
Plaid supports thousands of US institutions. If your bank shows up in Plaid's connection screen, it works. If you don't see your bank, it likely isn't supported yet, and we'll route a request to Plaid.
Why are my transactions a day late?
Banks publish transactions on a delay of anywhere from a few hours to three days. Koda syncs whenever transactions land. We don't see real-time pending charges; only what your bank releases.
Can I add transactions manually?
Yes (Premium). Money tab → Add transaction. Useful for cash purchases or for accounts you don't want to connect.
How do I disconnect a bank?
Settings → Banks → tap the institution → Disconnect. Your existing transaction history stays in the app; new data stops flowing.
Health and activity rings
Why don't I see activity rings?
Activity rings require an Apple Watch (or a device that writes Apple's activity summary data to HealthKit). The rings card hides entirely when no activity ring data is available rather than showing zeros.
Why does my activity ring show different numbers than the Fitness app?
It shouldn't. Koda reads the same HKActivitySummary the Fitness app uses. If you see a difference, the most common cause is a recent watch sync that hasn't completed. Pull to refresh on the Health tab.
What's the "AI insight" line under the rings?
A cross-data observation when there's enough history to support it. Example: "You sleep about 22 minutes longer on days you close Exercise." Only appears after 10+ days of overlapping ring and sleep data, and only when the difference is statistically meaningful.
AI features
Why doesn't the assistant know about my events / health / money?
Each data category has its own AI access toggle. New installs have everything off by default. Open Settings → Data & privacy, flip on the categories you want chat and briefs to see.
Does AI training use my data?
No. Anthropic's API does not train on the data Koda sends. This is contractual on Anthropic's end; it's not something we promise and they secretly break. If they change that policy, we'd notify users before continuing.
Does the AI see my bank account names?
No. Account names are replaced with opaque IDs (e.g. ACCT_3) before being sent to Anthropic. The assistant sees the IDs; you see real names on display because Koda maps them back.
Does the AI see my contacts' names?
Yes, if you've enabled the Contacts AI toggle. We chose not to tokenize contact names because the brief reads more naturally with real names ("Sarah's birthday is in 3 days") than with token IDs ("CONTACT_47's birthday is in 3 days"). If you'd rather no contact names go to the AI, leave the Contacts AI toggle off.
What's the "AI quota" message?
Free-tier accounts have a daily cap on AI requests to keep costs sustainable. Premium accounts have a much higher cap. The cap resets at midnight your local time.
Briefs
When does my morning brief arrive?
Whenever you've set it. Settings → Notifications → Daily brief notification time. Default is 7:00am. Briefs generate fresh when you open them so the data is current.
Can I change the brief's tone or length?
Not yet. Briefs aim for a two-minute read with a calm, observational voice. If yours feels too long or too short consistently, send feedback.
How do I share or copy part of a brief?
Tap and hold the brief text. Double-tap selects a word; triple-tap selects a sentence; drag the handles for a custom range. Standard iOS text selection menu appears with Copy / Look Up / Share.
Where do briefs get stored?
On your device and in your private iCloud database for cross-device continuity. They never leave Apple's encrypted storage except when freshly generated.
Capture
What does "Capture" do?
Drops whatever's in your head into the right destination. Type "milk and eggs" and it becomes a grocery reminder. Type "Coffee with Erin Friday 3pm" and it becomes a calendar event. Type "I'm feeling stuck on the project" and it becomes a journal entry. Long-press the Koda app icon, tap a Lock Screen Control, or ask Siri.
Can I capture from outside the app?
Yes:
- Home Screen: long-press the Koda app icon → Capture
- Lock Screen / Control Center: add the Koda control
- Siri: "Hey Siri, capture to Koda"
- Share Sheet: from any app that shares text or URLs
What if I don't want AI to sort the input?
Settings → Data & privacy → AI access → Smart capture off. Capture stays as a unified entry point but you pick the destination type manually before saving. (Free tier always uses manual mode.)
Account and subscription
How do I subscribe?
Settings → Plan → Upgrade to Premium (or the paywall that appears when you try a Premium feature on Free). Apple handles billing through your Apple ID. We never see your payment method.
How do I cancel?
iOS Settings → your Apple ID → Subscriptions → Koda → Cancel. Your premium features stay active through the end of the period you've paid for.
How do I delete my account?
Settings → Delete account. Permanently removes everything on our backend, signs you out, and unlinks bank connections. Your existing on-device data stays unless you also delete the app.
What if I delete the app?
Local data is gone unless you reinstall and sign in with the same Apple ID before iCloud's grace period expires. iCloud-synced data (journal, workout notes, briefs) restores from your iCloud account.
Reporting bugs and requesting features
The honest way: email me at support@hellokoda.app and describe what happened or what you'd like. One developer reads all of these. Screenshots help.
Crash reports: open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements → Analytics Data → look for entries starting with Koda- → tap → Share. Send the result our way.
